How Can I Help Build My Childs’ Self Esteem?

Respecting Self and Others

Nothing has a greater effect on children’s aptitudes and abilities than their self-esteem. The way they feel about themselves colors their whole world.  The mental self-portrait each child constructs is a direct result of their contacts with family, friends and teachers.  Children find out how much and in what ways they are valued through the ways the important people in their lives respond to their successes and failures. This in turn influences their own estimation of their aptitudes and abilities.  When children believe that they are valued, they feel self-confident, enjoy learning, and are eager to take on new activities.  Our designs should be on ways to help children recognize and appreciate their own special qualities, and to like whom they are. They must learn that working hard at something and not giving up, realizing that everyone has something they can do that makes them special, and feeling good about themselves by making someone else feel good are clear ways to help elevate their self-esteem.

It is easier for confident people to see the good in the differences of others.  It is important that we model this important giving and getting respect.  Part of children’s learning about themselves and differences that they and others have helps to overcome the barriers presented by languages, cultures and physical disabilities.  Young children are often disturbed or uncomfortable when they encounter someone who is different and may form a negative opinion of that person. It is our design to help children learn it’s okay to be different and that every person, even those with different backgrounds and abilities, deserves to be treated with respect and empathy. We hope to have the children be caring and responsible for themselves.
